HOW does prenatal testosterone effect gender-related behavior? Melissa Hines reports that...

Prenatal testosterone and gender-related behavior...

Testosterone plays an important role in mammalian brain development. In neural regions with appropriate receptors testosterone, or its metabolites, influences patterns of cell death and survival, neural connectivity and neurochemical characterization. Consequently, testosterone exposure during critical periods of early development produces permanent behavioural changes. In humans, affected behaviours include childhood play behaviour,…

Do you believe homosexuality is due to a chemical change in the brain?

I guess 'yes' if you are a mouse in the new Chinese study where a male mouse's desire to mate with either a male or a female is determined by the brain chemical serotonin.

But just watch how we/the media are going to be reading more into this than may be warranted!! See the study in March 24 issue of NATURE by neuroscientist Yi Rao of Peking University.…

The Transsexual Brain

I was not looking for affirmation when I picked up The Female Brain. I was just scanning the science shelf at my local Barnes and Noble, while I waited for my friend to do her shopping downstairs; but right there, right at eye level were two books side by side: The Female Brain and The Male Brain, both written by a neuro-physiologist. So curiosity overwhelmed mine.

It has been 4…

Nature pushes us to the more attractive women but puts a frog in our throat. Later on in life as we move past the typical reproductive period, the fog clears and we begin to see women for who they are and personally I enjoy the laughter and happiness that I derive from being around women along with the deeper talks than I get with other men who mainly whine, whine, whine!

Menopause vs Motherhood in Other Cultures?

I'm a US citizen, but I lived and raised my daughter (now 21) in Italy for 17 years. I left Italy 3 years ago (my daughter was spending her senior year at boarding school) to pursue my career, and subsequently separated from my Italian husband as well (we were already geographically apart since he did not follow me to the US).

I was of course aware that I was in a cross-cultural marriage, but had not accounted adequately for the weight of Italian cultural expectations of "la…

Over the past several months I've intentionally dated women who  are well above average intelligence, successful, and confident.  A couple of them have made it clear, on more than one occasion, that they do not "need" anyone in their life.  What's the point in telling a guy this? Why am i scared now that i turned 30?

Amy Nguyen

Dr., is there anything about turning 30 that might make a woman irrationally fearful? A supervisor of mine mentioned this to me 6 years ago; she all of a sudden became very anxious to ride the bus as she was wont to do all her life. I never... heard of…

Is this too controversial to ask?

Pina De Rosa In your opinion, is this quote followed by men and women equally as much? "Always follow your heart cause your head will screw you up time and time again" ~~ the topic I have in mind is a bit controversial: are you ok to discuss the difference between men and women experiencing the need to stay in an unfulfilling marriage just because the children are young..? If too controversial a topic, I… Continue

Are we forgetting history?

Nancy Holm writes..."We believe that western feminism has roots in the French Enlightenment while sharia law is irredeemably misogynistic. We're forgetting history, however. Consider Christianity's burning of women. Between 1480 and 1750, an estimated 75,000-100,000 executions occurred. We forget that the 1793 Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen categorically excluded women -- a decision that sent feminist Olympe de Gouges to the guillotine -- and that this women-hating… Continue
