Dr Louann author of The Female Brain

I am reading the Female Brain and got to the chapter on the teen girl brain, and found there were parts in there that identified me. I am 47 years old and have been in the midst of perimenopause, and probably menopause now with a whole bunch of questions roaming through my brain daily.

The one area that is of grave concern to me is that hormonal fluctuation that continues to plague me.

When I read the chapter about the PMDD I said bingo that has been me all my life! It seems to be getting harder as I get older.

My question is what are my options at this stage of my life? After I pass through Menopause, and that could be years, will this finally go away?

Well, the good news for you is that menopause is coming! and that will mean the end of PMDD due to fluctuating hormones. yipee! however, do you want to wait that long? (perhaps for you another 5-8 years) You are in the peri-menopause now--sort of a no-mans-land (woman's-land) of BOTH fluctuating and erratic hormone bursts. So, an alternative that women in my clinic like during the perimenopasue to stabilize the hormone roller coaster is: continuous birth control pills or patch...several are on the market--so ask your ob-gyn. happy days are AHEAD. all the best and keep us posted, Dr Brizendine
